India Tourist Visa Guide for Foreign Travelers

Planning a trip to India is exciting, and arranging the correct visa is one of the first steps before you travel. Whether you want to explore the Golden Triangle, Rajasthan, the Taj Mahal, Varanasi, Kerala or a customised private India tour, this guide explains the basic India tourist visa process for international travellers.

Visa rules, eligibility, permitted stay, fees and entry requirements can change. Always confirm the latest information on the official Government of India visa portal before applying.

Your Journey Starts With the Right Visa

India is one of the world’s most diverse travel destinations — a country where ancient heritage, colourful cities, royal palaces, wildlife, mountains, beaches, spirituality and local traditions come together in one unforgettable journey.

Whether you are planning to explore the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, discover the forts and palaces of Rajasthan, experience the backwaters of Kerala, visit the Taj Mahal, explore Varanasi or enjoy a customised private tour across India, obtaining the correct visa is one of the first steps in planning your trip.

Most foreign nationals travelling to India need a valid passport together with an appropriate Indian visa or eligible e-Visa before entering the country.

For many international travellers, the Indian e-Tourist Visa is the most convenient option because the application can be completed online before travelling.

The Government of India provides e-Visa facilities to nationals of many eligible countries. Eligibility depends on the traveller’s nationality, passport and purpose of travel.

Official India Visa Website: Indian Visa Online – indianvisaonline.gov.in

Radha Trips India recommends applying through the official Government of India portal and avoiding unofficial websites that may charge unnecessary intermediary or “express visa” fees.

30-Day e-Tourist Visa
This option is generally suitable for travellers planning a shorter holiday in India. It can be useful for Golden Triangle tours, Rajasthan holidays, Taj Mahal and Jaipur tours, Kerala holidays, Goa vacations and other short private India tours. Always check the current permitted entry and stay conditions before applying.

One-Year e-Tourist Visa
The one-year e-Tourist Visa may suit travellers who expect to visit India more than once during the visa validity period. The maximum permitted stay is subject to current Government of India rules and can vary by nationality.

Five-Year e-Tourist Visa
A five-year e-Tourist Visa may be available to eligible passport holders. It can be useful for repeat visitors, but it does not mean a traveller can remain continuously in India for five years. Individual stay limits and immigration conditions still apply.

The Indian e-Visa facility is available to passport holders of many countries and territories. Popular tourism markets include travellers from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, South Korea and many others.

Because the eligibility list can change, travellers should confirm their nationality directly on the official Indian e-Visa portal before making final travel arrangements.

An e-Tourist Visa is intended mainly for genuine tourism-related purposes such as sightseeing, recreation and casual visits to meet friends or relatives, subject to the current Government of India rules.

Valid Passport
Your passport must meet the validity requirements stated by the Government of India. The official e-Visa portal currently requires at least six months of passport validity at the time of applying.

Passport Information Page
A clear digital copy of the passport page containing your photograph and personal details is generally required.

Recent Photograph
Applicants are normally required to upload a recent front-facing photograph that meets the specifications shown on the official portal.

Travel Information
Be prepared to provide information such as your expected arrival date, travel purpose and other details requested in the application.

Return or Onward Travel
Travellers should be prepared to show onward or return travel where required.

Sufficient Funds
Travellers are expected to have sufficient funds for their stay in India.

Requirements can vary by visa category and nationality, so always follow the checklist shown during the official application.

Step 1 – Check Your Eligibility
Visit the official Government of India e-Visa website and confirm that your passport nationality is eligible. Do this before booking non-refundable travel arrangements.

Step 2 – Choose the Correct Visa Category
If you are travelling for a holiday, sightseeing or a private leisure trip, choose the appropriate e-Tourist Visa category. Do not use a Tourist Visa for employment, long-term study or any purpose that requires a different visa category.

Step 3 – Complete the Online Application
Enter all required personal and passport details carefully. Your name, passport number, date of birth and nationality should match your passport exactly.

Step 4 – Upload Your Documents
Upload the required passport copy, photograph and any other documents requested by the official portal. Make sure every file is clear and readable.

Step 5 – Pay the Official Visa Fee
Pay the applicable fee using the options provided on the official portal. Fees can vary by nationality, visa category and government policy, so Radha Trips India does not publish a fixed visa fee.

Step 6 – Check Your Application Status
Keep your application/reference number and use the official website to track your application.

Step 7 – Receive Your Electronic Travel Authorisation
If approved, follow the instructions issued by the Government of India. Keep a digital copy available and, where recommended, carry a printed copy with your passport.

Do not leave your visa application until the final moment. The official e-Visa portal currently advises eligible e-Tourist Visa applicants to apply at least four days before their intended date of arrival.

For a stress-free India holiday, it is sensible to organise your visa earlier so there is enough time to resolve any document or application issue if needed.

International travellers should also check the latest India e-Arrival Card requirements before departure. The official Indian Visa Online portal currently provides an online e-Arrival Card facility for foreign nationals and OCI/eOCI cardholders within the permitted pre-arrival window.

The e-Arrival Card is an arrival-information requirement and is not a replacement for an Indian visa. Always check the official portal close to your departure date for the latest arrival formalities.

  • Make sure the name and passport details used in your visa application exactly match your passport.
  • Check your visa validity and permitted period of stay before boarding your flight.
  • Carry your passport and relevant visa/ETA documentation during your journey.
  • Do not overstay the period permitted by Indian immigration authorities.
  • Use the visa only for the activity for which it was granted.
  • Check your arrival airport or seaport against the current list of authorised e-Visa entry points.
  • Keep secure digital copies of important travel documents.
  • Consider comprehensive international travel insurance covering medical emergencies, cancellations and other unexpected situations.
